Now, here's your host, Certified Life Coach, Wendy Johnson.

[00:00:27] Hello, beautiful friends. How are you doing on this beautiful day? I am doing fabulous and I'm excited to be with you. Today I want to talk about the power of rituals. As the famous author Mitch Albom once said, "Rituals are the formulas by which harmony is restored." Perhaps the most profound aspect of rituals is their power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

[00:00:59] They're about awakening to the magic and wonder that lies within the most mundane moments. The problem with our busy world is that most people go through their lives doing their mundane tasks without the power of a ritual. So let's find out how to create your mundane routine into a powerful ritual.

[00:01:29] First, what is a ritual? Rituals are a set of actions, behaviors, or procedures formed in a specific sequence and often with symbolic meaning. And they're typically repeated in a consistent manner. Oftentimes they're associated with religious, cultural, or social practices. So let's go through the key aspects of a ritual.

[00:01:58] First, it's symbolic. It involves actions, objects, words, or gestures that represent a deeper meaning. And then it's repetitive. It's typically performed in a repetitive manner in a prescribed sequence of actions or steps. And three, there's a structure with a ritual. There's a framework governing how it's performed.

[00:02:27] And the fourth aspect is intent. There's a specific purpose or intention in mind. And the fifth aspect is participation. Rituals often involve participation From not only an individual but also a group. And the sixth aspect is emotion. Rituals evoke strong emotional responses in an individual or a group. And those emotions can range from reverence, and awe, to joy and celebration.

[00:03:04] Emotions play a crucial role in shaping the experience and impact of the ritual. And the seventh aspect is community. Many rituals are communal activities that bring people together. When people come together, there's a sense of belonging and shared identity among participants. And the eighth aspect of rituals is they frequently mark transitions or changes in status, such as birth, coming of age, marriage, death, they serve important rites of passage in a person's life.

[00:03:48] And they make sense of life's transition. There are many more social practices. There are annual and seasonal festivals. There are funeral rituals, there's the pledge of allegiance, and then games, sports, and legal systems all have a ritual that they perform at the beginning. What is the deep meaning of ritual?

[00:04:18] A ritual is a repetitive action or event that represents something of deeper, significance. For instance, celebrating a birthday represents anticipating a whole new year of growth. According to Harvard professor Michael Norton, routines are something we just do. Whereas rituals are about how we do them.

[00:04:44] They are emotional catalysts that energize, inspire, and elevate us. Rituals add something to our lives that enriches them, helping us savor our experiences. Most importantly, they impact us on an emotional level. They raise our vibration and bring focus to our day. Why are rituals so powerful? Having a ritual to look forward to can be grounding and reassuring in turbulent times.

[00:05:22] They provide us a sense of predictability and consistency, and rituals are often tied to our values, and when they're tied to our values, they help us connect back to our sense of self. What is meaningful in our lives? Rituals alleviate grief, and they're performed after experiencing losses, or rituals are performed before high-pressure tasks.

[00:05:52] Like going on stage. I've worked with several coaches who travel all around the world. Before they get on stage, they have a backstage routine. They may be doing jumping jacks or breathing. They have some type of routine that they do every single time. Why do we love rituals? What happens when you do a ritual?

[00:06:21] They are extraordinarily powerful and offer enormous rewards for a small investment of time and effort. Like habits and routines, rituals help carry us through the rough patches. When we're too stressed or distracted to think carefully about what we're doing. They allow us to pause and get grounded and incorporate a practice into our mundane activity.

[00:06:54] And rituals are considered sacred. Why? Because rituals move energy in two directions. First, it focuses in on one place, time, and event. And two, it releases power into the everyday stream of events with an energy of abundance. The primal vibration that reverberates throughout time. It's invoking this powerful, abundant energy into our being and into our day.

[00:07:35] Also, rituals have meaning in love. Relationship rituals include habits formed over time that allow you to dedicate a specific time, tradition, or holiday to the person you love. I had already mentioned birthdays. But it could be day of the week where you have a date night. That's one of my favorite nights is going out on Friday night on date night or having a date or a time specifically for having intimacy.

[00:08:11] How do rituals influence you as a person? They're important because they empower us individually or collectively. They help us work through difficult problems. They can help us create habits, and they help us to learn, to grow, and to connect with ourselves deeper, and with others. And there are rituals of emotional connection.

[00:08:41] And these can include how you greet people, how you say goodbye to people, depending on your culture. Do you shake hands? Do you hug? Do you kiss on one cheek? Do you kiss on both cheeks? And what do you say to one another? What about toasting? Do you salute with a drink? And how do you eat meals together? Do you say a prayer to yourself or do you say a community prayer?

[00:09:14] Do you light a candle before your meal? Rituals of emotional connection involve how you begin your day, how you wind down for the evening, how you connect while at work. You may already have rituals in place. I can't imagine living my life without rituals. It makes each task I do more meaningful. It's not only what I'm doing, but how I'm doing it and how I'm present with what I'm doing.

[00:09:48] In the morning when I wake up, I love to go into the kitchen and squeeze lemon into water and sprinkle it with Himalayan salt. I do this every morning and then I make my coffee. Then I go into the living room where I journal and after journaling I go into my space, into my office. I have a corner where I do my meditation.

[00:10:18] This is how I love to begin my day and this has changed over the years. There have been years way back when the first thing I did after I put my workout clothes on right next to my bed, I had a glass of water and I ran out the door and started my day with a run. Or for many years, I went directly to my yoga mat and did sun salutations to start my morning.

[00:10:51] And as I've gotten older, my routines have changed and so have my rituals. So what is the difference between a routine and a ritual? There are many similarities. The purpose of a routine is to accomplish tasks in daily activities, such as work, exercising, or preparing meals. A ritual incorporates a deep experience within the routine.

[00:11:23] Oftentimes the intent of a routine is performed out of habit, and you've done it so many times you don't even have to think about it. But a ritual performed with the habit gives intention and purpose. It invokes spiritual, emotional, or symbolic significance. Routines tend to be more flexible and adaptable, but rituals often have a fixed or prescribed structure that remains consistent over time, such as specific prayers or blessings.

[00:12:02] The overall framework of the ritual is preserved, and routines may not necessarily evoke strong emotional responses. However, rituals often involve heightened emotional engagement. They create feelings of reverence, joy, and connection. And most routines are individual, but rituals are often rooted in cultural, religious, or social traditions when there's a shared experience that binds people together.

[00:12:40] In summary, while routines and rituals both involve repetition and structure, the key distinction lies in their purpose, intent, and the significance they hold for individuals and communities. It's important to note that a daily ritual is more than a routine. It's an act of self-care carried out mindfully and with reverence.

[00:13:08] You could use a ritual to set an intention for your day to help you process difficult emotions or to manifest your goals. But whichever kind you choose, a ritual will always bring focus to the present moment and imbue your life with a sense of calm and purpose. Whether you use a ritual to empower, energize, calm, or inspire, daily rituals will help you to live fully and intentionally.

[00:13:43] This will turn your ordinary days into extraordinary days. So how do we turn a routine into a ritual? There are eight steps that I want to go through to transform your daily routine into a ritual. First, identify the routine or habit. Which routine do you want to transform into a ritual? And this could be something you do daily, weekly, monthly, or annually.

[00:14:16] Second, you want to reflect on your intention. And lastly, you want to reflect on the intention. What is the underlying purpose or intention behind the routine? Ask yourself why you engage in this activity and what deeper meaning it holds for you. So you're not just doing it to do it. You know the why behind it.

[00:14:39] Take a moment and reflect. And the third step is to add symbolism. Introducing symbolic elements incorporates a specific gesture. objects or words that represent an important concept to you. For example, lighting a candle, reciting a mantra, or using a symbolic image. I light a candle and turn on jazz music before I start cooking dinner.

[00:15:12] I recite a daily mantra or affirmation. when I'm in my office or when I'm journaling. This is an example of how you can turn that routine into a ritual. Also create a ritual space. Do you have a specific space or environment for performing a ritual? This could be a corner of your home, a quiet outdoor spot, or any space that fosters a sense of focus or sacredness.

[00:15:47] I have a place in my office, but I also often use the living room because nobody else sits there. It is my space, and I have a meditation bench in my side yard, and when it's warm enough, I sit out there to meditate, or after I've completed my yoga practice, I place my hands in prayer at my heart. I salute with namaste and thank myself for how I've gifted myself peace and flexibility and openness to my body and a ritual practice accompanies the activity.

[00:16:31] So I was just talking about meditation. You could incorporate breathing techniques or heart-opening stretches. that help you connect with the present moment and cultivate intentionality. And the sixth step is to set a ritual time. Choose a consistent time to perform the ritual, whether it's morning, evening, or a specific time of day that aligns with your schedule and intentions.

[00:17:01] Establish a regular schedule. It reinforces the ritual significance and helps integrate it into your daily life. The seventh step is to engage the senses, engage multiple senses to make the ritual experience more immersive and meaningful, incorporate elements of Music, incense, or aromatherapy to create a sensory-rich environment that enhances the impact of the ritual.

[00:17:36] I incorporate different types of music depending on what type of activity I'm doing. I have music for yoga practices, music for focused work, music for cooking dinner, music outside. When we're using the spa and pool, we love to listen to yacht rock music. We have Sunday morning music and I use essential oils and I'm a member of young living oils.

[00:18:09] I often place oils somewhere on my pulse points or between my eyes when I'm doing something or before bed, I use oils on my feet before I sleep. This is how I incorporate ritual into the routine. And lastly, reflect and adapt. After performing the ritual, take time to reflect on your experience and how it affected you.

[00:18:41] Pay attention to any emotions, insights, or sensations that have come up for you. And be willing to adapt and refine your rituals over time. Because even rituals can become mundane if they aren't involving and elevating your emotions and your well-being. By following these eight steps, you can infuse your routines with deeper meaning and transform them into rituals that enrich your daily life and cultivate a greater sense of mindfulness, intentionality, and connection.

[00:19:23] Thank you, friends. This is it for today. I hope you enjoyed today's podcast and I hope this gives you some inspiration to look at the rituals you currently have. and to refine and create new rituals for yourself. Take care, friends.
